Weekend round up

This is exactly how I felt this morning!
So I haven’t blogged since Friday. I can’t even remember what happened on Friday for me not to blog! Actually, tell a white lie, I was writing a post on Friday that I didn’t publish, because it got too confusing! It was a ramble on life satisfaction; how I really don’t understand how people my age (or any age) are satisfied with going out every night, getting drunk and getting with different guys. I feel that there is no stability, no real life fulfilment in doing that. Whereas people like me, in long term relationships, have stability, someone to go home to, companionship and someone to share life with. To me, that is what life is about. Sharing it with someone you love.
Anyway, then I realised that my idea of a “perfect” life is not the same as everyone else’s, and those who do go out every night are satisfied with their lives, for many different reasons, that I can sort of remember from my psychology lectures, but I won’t delve into!
So it’s Monday today, and I am extremely tired from a busy weekend! On Saturday Gavin and I went to visit my parents’ friends in Crawley and had a lovely pub meal.
On Sunday, my friends, Gavin and I went to Legoland, Windsor. I have lots of photos to post, and I will do this tonight. Along with the Foo Fighters photos I was supposed to post up a month ago! Anyway, I had such a good time yesterday. I think we managed to go onto all of the rides that we could go on, and went on a few of them twice. It was a great day, and although the park is mainly aimed for children, being with my friends made it all the while better. I haven’t laughed as much as I did yesterday for very long time. Ah, I love my friends! I would recommend you go there if you haven’t been already, but, it is bloody expensive. Entry price is £35, and food is not cheaper than £5. So save your pennies and take a packed lunch! Watch this space for photos! I promise to post them, because they are all lovely! Have a good Monday! (If that is possible!)

Imagine you're looking through a collection of short stories. One of the titles catches your interest. That's the story you want to read first. What might the title be? Invent a title that would make you want to read the story. Now, write a story to go with that title...

So I realise I haven’t done my day 3 of the 30 days of story inspiration. Today’s story is:
Imagine you're looking through a collection of short stories. One of the titles catches your interest. That's the story you want to read first. What might the title be? Invent a title that would make you want to read the story. Now, write a story to go with that title...
This is really hard! I think I’ll just write a silly story rather than a serious one! The title is inspired from my fiancĂ© who has always said he wants to write a child’s story book based on this title.
There, there Jenni Bear.

A tiny kitten appears falls out of the basket on the rug by the fire. It’s soft, blonde fur is flat on one side where she’s been sleeping. Still half asleep, and in a bit of a daze, she bumps into the leg of a chair, and lets out a small yelp. “There, there Jenni Bear”.
Yawning, she walks over to the kitchen where her food and water bowls are. She chomps down her food so fast she gets the hiccups. She decides to take a drink from her water bowl. Lapping up her water, she suddenly has an enormous hic-cup, which sends her head first into her bowl. Like a shock of lightening, she takes her head out of the water and tries to shake it dry. “There, there Jenni Bear”.
Needing to dry her little, wet head, she runs over to the fire back in the lounge where her basket is, and lays on the rug. Feeling the warmth of the fire, and softness of the sheep skin rug, she soon falls asleep.
She is suddenly awakened with a sharp pain! Her owner’s toddler just stood on her tiny tail. With tears in her eyes, and a sigh, she lays her head back down. “There, there Jenni Bear”
That’s my little short story for day 3!
N.B. That gorgeous little kitten is not my own, unfortunately!

20 Something Bloggers - Blog Swap!

Hey, I have a guest blogger here today! I'll be on her blog here:  http://jessinayellowdress.tumblr.com/And, reading her post, then thinking about what I wrote? Well, let's just say you're in for a treat!

Hello everyone! I’m Jess from ‘Jess in a Yellow Dress’ and I’m here guest-blogging today. I’m going to talk about my summer (side note: can you believe summer’s almost over?)

I’ll preface this by telling you all that I’m in Canada. I’m on the east coast, in a tiny-slash-large city known as Halifax, in Nova Scotia. There’s a magnificent blend of urban and rural here: shopping malls, lazy rural-looking streets, a bustling downtown core, suburbs, waaaay more universities than you can shake a stick at, parks, large open fields, etc. etc. etc.

When I pictured summer in my head, way back in February, when it was combination snowing-and-raining and there were deep piles of slush covering the sidewalks and my feet were frozen (and I figured I would die that night because how long can you survive when your feet are frozen and you have to walk another 10 minutes to your apartment?), I pictured something completely different than what I ended up with.

I knew my summer would change when I lost my job in May.  I worked at a clothing store catering to old women, which went bankrupt (stop arguing with me about taxes and stop looking at my left ring finger!!). Given that our economy sucks, and job creation has been at a stand-still (unless you want to work for those non-profit organizations and stand on the street begging people to talk to you about girls in Africa or Amnesty International),  I’ve been unemployed since the beginning of May. I’m actively looking for work, but nothing yet. In my unemployed (or funemployed) state, I’ve been able to travel around Nova Scotia; visit with my family; walk around Halifax; read.

Here are my Top Ten Summer Moments:

1.        My magazine articles were published! I’m a freelance writer, and I wrote the cover story for my alma mater’s alumni magazine. Seeing my by-line gave me butterflies!

2.       I climbed a hay marshmallow in New Brunswick. You know what a hay marshmallow is, right? It’s a bale of hay that looks like a marshmallow. They’re tall, they’re awesome, and they litter the fields of New Brunswick. We drove past a field of hay marshmallows close to the road, and we couldn’t resist getting out and climbing. It definitely was the be-all-end-all of a dream I’ve had since I was five (which wasn’t that long ago, or anything…)

3.       Going to the zoo. I haven’t been to the zoo in 10 years, at least. Seeing all the animals (lions, zebras, and black swans) was an awesome way to spend a stifling hot afternoon.

4.      Lounging on the beach. I’m not much of a beach-goer. I don’t wear bathing suits, I’m deathly afraid of water, and I could sit outside until the moon’s out and I wouldn’t tan. But this summer I spent a lot of time walking along beaches, staring out at the water, where the ocean and the sky meet. There’s something so insanely peaceful about the water.

5.       I’m one of those insanely awesome (read: probably desperately lame) people who eat up anything Wills and Kate. The night before the royal wedding? I didn’t sleep. So when Wills and Kate made their first royal visit to Canada, all news networks were focused on the trip (in Canada, we pretty much leave our elected officials alone, unless they do something newsworthy. It’s like Harper – our prime minister – didn’t exist while Wills and Kate were here.). So if you’re asking, ‘Jess, did you watch Wills and Kate dragonboat race in PEI? And cook with a culinary class in Montreal? And tour a fire-ravaged town in Alberta?’ the answer is yes. Yes I did. And it was awesome.

6.       I discovered the joy and awesomeness that is Parks and Recreation. How did I survive without watching this wonderful, insanely hilarious show? All I know is: I don’t want to go back to my life pre-Parks and Rec. And I want to marry Ron Swanson, but my name isn’t Tammy – I can change, Ron!

7.       I’m a huge fan of classic Hollywood movies – my TV is almost always tuned to TCM. Every August they do a ‘Summer Under the Stars’ and highlight a different actor or actress every day. I’m watching a bunch of movies I’ve never seen before and having a fun time doing it.

8.       Playing with my dog. I’m a three-hour drive away from my parents and my dog; my faithful friend and second shadow. I usually never go home a lot (first it was because I was in school, then because I had a near-full time job), so this summer I’ve been able to spend a lot of time just walking the dog, playing with him, feeding him waaay too many snacks, and cuddling.

9.       Wandering around Halifax, exploring the city and taking pictures. This city’s been my home for going-on five years now, and it never gets old.

10.    Reading. Honestly, there’s nothing funner than just grabbing a book, laying out in the sun (or on your bed, fan pointing in your face) and getting lost in it. I’m currently reading One Day by David Nicholls – I can’t wait to see the movie, but I want to read the book first (because books-turned-into-movies always suck, and I want to know what I’m missing).

What’ve been your top moments this summer? Enjoy the rest of your summers, folks!

Another week starts

Monday today. Another weekend has flown by, and another week this month is gone. Only 2 weeks now until September. I am not looking forward to winter. Every year I think it will be different, I think that I won’t be affected by the lack of sunlight; I will stay happy and positive and I will not dress like a miserable frump because I am so cold. Every year I am sure that I will be able to handle the cold; that winter is never usually that cold and I can wear a vest top, cardigan and jacket and not end shivering and freezing cold. Every year, I am wrong! But there is always hope for change!
I’ve been reading a lot of fashion blogs lately. I don’t know why, but I love looking at other people’s fashion and style, and it’s an added bonus that the fashion blogs that I read are UK based, and their all high street fashion, so I could quite easily walk down the street and make a purchase. But what I have found is that Primark is featured quite often, amongst my favourite shops River Island and Topshop. This is bizarre to me, as whenever I dare to venture into the Primark jungle, I can never find anything. And when I do, the fit is awful on me. It just does not fit. I don’t know if that’s because I find things that people would not see as a “good find”, or it’s because I’m not your average shape, and I don’t fit into their generic, 8-10, 10-12, square shaped tops! It’s shame really, because that would save me a rather lot of money!
So, what have been doing with my life? Well, in terms of making something out of it, nothing! The Graduate schemes don’t open fully until September; the Birkbeck university open day is also in September. So at the moment, I’m just riding the life train at a slow and steady pace. I might have a look at some jobs today, just to see what’s around!
But I do have lots of things to look forward to; I am rather busy for the next 4 weekends! The 21st August my friends and I are going to Legoland; the bank holiday weekend after that Gavin and I are going away to West Lulworth; the weekend after that, the first weekend in September it is the wedding fair, and then the weekend after that is a vintage fair in London. I love it when I have plans on the weekends. It is also nice to laze around and do nothing once in a while, but I prefer getting out and about!
Last night, Gavin and I went out with our friends to the pub. They were going out to a rock club afterwards which I would have liked to have done, but I was so tired by half 10, and we both had work this morning. So I left them at the pub. My friends didn’t so they didn’t have to worry, lucky souls! One thing I hate though when I have to leave early is that I miss out on things. It’s immature, but I hate feeling left out! Makes me upset *sad face!*
